There is such a variety of software designed to help with project management it can seem overwhelming to match a program to a specific need.

The following list is meant to introduce you to some great software and help direct you to a program best fitting your company. If pricing is not listed, then prices vary depending on the package, length of agreement and business size:

1.    General Project Management

Autotask: This program combines project management software with help desk solutions. It includes a “timesheet, billing program, real-time updating with MS Project import and Outlook integration.” Those interested can request a free personalized demo with sample data. Customers pay a low monthly fee per user and can add or delete users as often as they wish. Customers can expect to pay a base price $150 per month for five users.

TeamHeadquarters: This program is great for large global companies because of its easy-to-use Internet interface. It includes integrated project management and help desk solutions. It claims to create value through “cost reduction, improvements in operating efficiency, and increased strategic advantage.”

2.    Timesheet Management

Autotask: This program is great for time management as well as general project management. The “web-based time and billing solution provides real-time access to manage your resources profitably.” The program includes project management, CRM and Microsoft Outlook integration.

AceProject: This program helps track employees, as well as project progression, as it “provides a simple way to track employee time spent per project in a distributed work environment.” The time sheet tracking and reporting is also Web-based for online project administration of small businesses and independent contractors.

Replicon’s Web TimeSheet: This program tracks the time spent per project, as well as project status and cost with a Web interface. This project management software has the added bonus of a quick setup: implementation is two to three days. Customers can download a free trial Replicon's Web site.

3.    Online Calendar/In-Sync Calendar Management

Connect Daily: Users in online forums rave about how easy it is to use Connect Daily. Some advanced features included resource management, RSS Feeds and e-mail reminders. For more flexibility, it is available as installed software on the user’s system or for use on the Connect Daily server. It offers a 30-day trial.

MyOffice: This program is a purely Internet hosted online office. Designed for personal or business use, this program features shared calendars, contacts, e-mail, tasks, reminders, follow-ups, notes and file storage. It costs $82 per user per year and a 30-day free trial is available.

Replicon's Web TimeOff:  By automating certain tasks and projects, this software promises to “eliminate time-off errors and abuses” with its time-clock function and make other spreadsheet processes quicker, easier and more accurate with “at-a-glance calendar views, time off balances and liability reports.” A free trial of this software is available for download.

4.    Document Management

DocumenTree: This online document management service allows businesses to “share files and collaborate over the Internet with clients, vendors and employees” with the flexibility of compatibility with any Internet browser. Like Autotask, the customer will have unlimited free guest users (great for larger, high-volume companies) and company branding. A free Internet trial is available.

AceProject: This software offers a document management system which “permits associating files to both task and project levels.” For security, users can lock project documents. An added bonus: their folder tree-view makes document organization easier.
