Creating a project timeline helps all those involved plan their time, visualize the entire scope of the project and see how far they have come from the project's genesis. Project timelines instill confidence and continued enthusiasm for reaching the goal at the end of the timeline.
A project timeline is a much-needed roadmap helping clarify where the project is going and when it should reach its milestones. By getting each person to visualize how much time will be spent on each mini-goal, everyone is able to utilize updated, consistent and shared communication. Not only will it help workers clearly understand their responsibilities, but in large corporations it can provide effective communication with stakeholders and customers. This increased communication often leads to confidence in the company's future.
A project timeline should be specific about who is supposed to complete a specific task and what their deadline is to have the task completed. Meeting deadlines keeps a project on track, but a timeline should be able to change with the project as well. The longer time period the project timeline represents, the more one should expect changes in it. Some tasks might take less time, while others may not be able to be completed on schedule, even if everything is being done correctly.
